Awkward

My 14-year-old sister IM’d me the other night: what do you do if you like a guy and he tells you he likes you?

Turns out she and a friend were discussing this difficulty, as the event may occur for the friend in the relatively near future.  It was very cute.  She wants him to have to talk to her parents before they go on anything resembling dates (not an uncommon idea in some Christian circles, and even without religious inspiration it’s really not a bad idea for any teen to have a caring adult with input into her dating life) but she didn’t think she’d be able to say so.

So of course, we “worked out” a plan for what would have happened anyway: she’ll squeak “I like you too” and run away and have a friend deliver a note.

At this point I mentioned that, if this all happens, the young man will no doubt feel as embarrassed and awkward as she will.  There was a long pause.

“….we hadn’t thought of that.”

How on earth does anyone survive the teen years?
